Riyadh, February 9, 2025 – In a landmark move poised to transform the technological landscape of the Middle East and Africa (MEA) region, Alat and Lenovo have officially begun construction on a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. This initiative is a significant step towards producing millions of “Saudi Made” laptops, desktops, and servers, aligning seamlessly with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 objectives of economic diversification and industrial advancement.

The foundation of this venture was laid on May 29, 2024, when Alat, a company focused on transforming global industries and creating a world-class manufacturing hub in the Kingdom, announced a strategic collaboration with Lenovo, a global leader in technology and innovation. This partnership involved a substantial investment of $2 billion through three-year zero-coupon convertible bonds, which was finalized on January 8, 2025, following all necessary shareholder and regulatory approvals.

Yuanqing Yang, Chairman and CEO of Lenovo, expressed optimism about the collaboration, emphasizing how the partnership would enhance Lenovo’s presence in the MEA region. “Through this powerful strategic collaboration and investment with Alat, we gain a stronger global presence, a robust regional foothold, and the ability to capitalize on the incredible growth momentum in Saudi Arabia and the wider MEA region,” Yang stated.

Facility Details and Production Goals

The new manufacturing hub will span 200,000 square meters within “Riyadh Integrated,” a development operated by the Special Integrated Logistics Zone (SILZ). Strategically located just 15 minutes from Riyadh’s international airport, the facility is expected to begin production by 2026. This site will become an essential part of Lenovo’s extensive global manufacturing network, which already includes over 30 factories across countries such as Argentina, Brazil, China, Germany, Hungary, India, Japan, Mexico, and the USA.

The Riyadh-based factory is designed to enhance Lenovo’s supply chain resilience and flexibility, enabling the company to better serve its growing customer base in the MEA region. The facility will adhere to high environmental standards, ensuring sustainable operations. It will focus on producing a range of technology products, including laptops, desktops, and servers, all proudly bearing the “Saudi Made” label. The goal is to manufacture millions of devices annually to meet regional demand efficiently.

Economic Impact and Job Creation

The collaboration between Alat and Lenovo is anticipated to significantly impact the Saudi economy. Projections suggest the creation of up to 15,000 direct jobs and an additional 45,000 indirect jobs, collectively contributing as much as $10 billion to the non-oil GDP by 2030. This aligns perfectly with the Kingdom’s Vision 2030, which seeks to reduce dependency on oil revenues by diversifying the economy through industrial and technological advancements.

Amit Midha, CEO of Alat, highlighted the long-term benefits of the partnership. “We are incredibly proud to become a strategic investor in Lenovo and partner with them on their continued journey as a leading global technology company,” said Midha. He emphasized that the establishment of a regional headquarters and a world-class manufacturing hub in Saudi Arabia would amplify Lenovo’s potential across the MEA region.

This manufacturing facility is also expected to stimulate local industries and supply chains, providing opportunities for Saudi-based companies to become part of Lenovo’s extensive global network. By prioritizing local suppliers and fostering a collaborative environment, the facility aims to contribute significantly to the Kingdom’s goal of developing a robust and self-sufficient industrial base.

Regional Headquarters and Future Prospects

In addition to the manufacturing plant, Lenovo plans to establish its Middle East and Africa regional headquarters in Riyadh. This move underscores the company’s commitment to the region and its intent to leverage the burgeoning IT and business services market in the MEA area. The headquarters will include a flagship retail space, expanded investments in research and development, marketing, and strategic partnerships within both Saudi Arabia and the broader MEA region.

The establishment of a regional headquarters is expected to accelerate Lenovo’s market penetration in the region, enhancing customer service capabilities and enabling quicker response times to market demands. By having a dedicated presence in Riyadh, Lenovo aims to tailor its products and services more effectively to the unique needs of MEA markets, which are witnessing rapid growth in technology adoption and digital transformation initiatives.

Alignment with Vision 2030

Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 is an ambitious plan aimed at reducing the Kingdom’s reliance on oil revenues, diversifying the economy, and enhancing public service sectors such as health, education, infrastructure, and technology. The collaboration between Alat and Lenovo is a testament to this vision, particularly in the realms of industrial development and technological advancement.

The Kingdom’s focus on becoming a global hub for technology and manufacturing is evident in the strategic incentives offered to attract foreign investments. The Special Integrated Logistics Zone (SILZ), where the new Lenovo manufacturing facility will be located, provides benefits such as tax exemptions, simplified customs procedures, and streamlined regulations to facilitate business operations. By attracting global technology leaders like Lenovo to invest and establish operations, Saudi Arabia is positioning itself as a competitive player in the global technology and manufacturing sectors.

Furthermore, the focus on producing “Saudi Made” technology products is expected to boost national pride and consumer confidence while fostering innovation and technological self-sufficiency. The manufacturing hub will also serve as a training ground for local talent, equipping them with advanced skills in manufacturing, logistics, and information technology, thereby creating a highly skilled workforce ready to meet the demands of a rapidly evolving tech landscape.

Challenges and Opportunities

While the project holds immense potential, it is not without challenges. Establishing a large-scale manufacturing facility in a region traditionally dependent on oil requires significant investments in infrastructure, skilled labor, and technology transfer. However, the Kingdom’s ongoing efforts to develop smart cities, digital infrastructure, and educational initiatives focused on STEM fields are seen as positive steps toward addressing these challenges.

Moreover, the strategic location of Saudi Arabia, bridging Asia, Africa, and Europe, presents an unparalleled opportunity for Lenovo to optimize its logistics and distribution networks. The facility’s proximity to key international shipping routes will enable faster and more cost-effective delivery of products across the MEA region, enhancing Lenovo’s competitive edge.

Conclusion

The groundbreaking of the new manufacturing facility marks a significant milestone in the partnership between Alat and Lenovo. As construction progresses and the facility moves closer to becoming operational, the anticipated economic and technological benefits are expected to contribute substantially to Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 objectives.

This collaboration exemplifies how strategic investments and partnerships can drive economic growth, create employment opportunities, and foster technological innovation. By laying a strong foundation for advanced manufacturing capabilities within the Kingdom, Alat and Lenovo are setting a precedent for future endeavors in the region, promising a new era of technological excellence and economic prosperity for Saudi Arabia.
