MECC’s Al Khushaina Cleanup: A Step Towards Environmental Preservation
In a dedicated effort to protect Qatar’s natural habitats, the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MECC) recently conducted a comprehensive cleaning campaign at Al Khushaina meadow. This initiative, overseen by the Wildlife Protection Department, successfully removed significant amounts of solid waste, plastics, and other debris that posed threats to the meadow’s delicate ecosystem.
Al Khushaina meadow is one of Qatar’s many natural landscapes that play a crucial role in supporting biodiversity. However, like many such areas, it faces challenges from pollution and human activities. The MECC’s proactive approach in organizing this cleanup underscores its commitment to preserving the country’s environmental heritage.
In a related effort, the MECC responded promptly to a citizen’s report concerning waste accumulation at Dahl Al Misfer, a notable cave located south of Rawdat Rashid in central Qatar. The ministry dispatched a cleaning team to the site, ensuring the complete removal of waste and restoring the area’s natural beauty. This swift action highlights the importance of community involvement in environmental conservation and the effectiveness of collaborative efforts between the public and governmental bodies.

The Wildlife Protection Department has expressed gratitude for the active participation of citizens in safeguarding the environment. They emphasize the necessity for visitors to maintain public cleanliness and to dispose of waste responsibly in designated areas. Such collective responsibility is vital for the ongoing preservation of Qatar’s natural landscapes.
These initiatives are part of a broader strategy by the MECC to rehabilitate and protect Qatar’s meadows. In March 2024, the ministry announced an ambitious project aiming to restore 100 meadows over five years. The initial phase targets the rehabilitation of 36 meadows within the first year. This project involves cleaning the areas, planting native trees, and installing protective measures to prevent vehicular intrusion while allowing public enjoyment of these natural spaces. The overarching goal is to rejuvenate the vegetation cover and enhance the ecological balance of these habitats.
The MECC’s comprehensive approach also includes extensive inspection campaigns to monitor and prevent environmental violations. Starting from January 2024, in collaboration with the General Cleanliness Department of the Ministry of Municipality and the Internal Security Force “Lekhwiya,” the ministry has been conducting inspections across terrestrial and coastal areas, as well as natural reserves. These efforts aim to enforce environmental laws, protect wildlife, and ensure public adherence to regulations concerning camping and land use.
Public awareness and cooperation are pivotal to the success of these environmental conservation efforts. The MECC continues to encourage citizens and residents to report any environmental violations and to participate actively in maintaining the cleanliness and natural beauty of Qatar’s diverse ecosystems. Through such collaborative endeavors, Qatar strives to preserve its natural heritage for future generations.
