Red Sea Global Introduces Sustainable Aviation Fuel in Saudi Arabia
In a groundbreaking move toward sustainable travel, Red Sea Global (RSG) has announced the introduction of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) at Saudi Arabia’s Red Sea International Airport (RSI). This initiative, the first of its kind in the Kingdom, is expected to significantly cut carbon emissions from air travel while promoting environmentally friendly tourism.
A Collaborative Effort for a Greener Future
RSG, the visionary developer behind The Red Sea and AMAALA tourism destinations, has joined forces with daa International, the operator of RSI, and Arabian Petroleum Supply Company (APSCO), the airport’s fuel supplier. This partnership ensures that all airlines operating at RSI have the option to refuel using SAF, marking a major milestone in Saudi Arabia’s efforts to embrace sustainable aviation practices.
This initiative aligns with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030, which emphasizes environmental sustainability and carbon reduction in various industries, including tourism and aviation. By pioneering the use of SAF in the Kingdom, RSI sets an example for other airports and airlines to adopt greener fuel alternatives.
What is Sustainable Aviation Fuel?
Sustainable Aviation Fuel is a cleaner alternative to traditional jet fuel. It is designed to significantly lower greenhouse gas emissions in the aviation industry. SAF can be produced from various renewable sources, including clean hydrogen combined with captured carbon dioxide, as well as bio-based materials such as agricultural waste, used cooking oil, and municipal solid waste.
At RSI, the SAF blend consists of 35% SAF mixed with 65% standard Jet A1 fuel. This combination results in an immediate reduction of carbon emissions by up to 35% for each aircraft using the fuel. Unlike traditional jet fuels, which rely entirely on fossil resources, SAF offers a renewable and more sustainable option that helps reduce the aviation sector’s environmental impact.

Fly Red Sea: Leading the Way in Green Aviation
As part of its long-term net-zero ambitions, RSG’s subsidiary, Fly Red Sea, has committed to using only sustainable fuels for its seaplane operations. Fly Red Sea offers seaplane transfers, private charters, and scenic aerial tours of The Red Sea. The airline will exclusively operate with SAF and Lower-Carbon Aviation Fuel (LCAF), further reinforcing RSG’s dedication to eco-friendly aviation solutions.
This commitment places Fly Red Sea at the forefront of sustainable air travel in the region. By integrating SAF into its operations from the outset, the company is demonstrating that luxury travel and environmental responsibility can go hand in hand.
Beyond SAF: Additional Sustainability Measures
The introduction of SAF is just one part of RSG’s broader sustainability strategy. The company is implementing a range of measures aimed at reducing carbon emissions and promoting eco-friendly tourism.
One of the most ambitious initiatives is RSG’s commitment to running all of its operations on renewable energy. Over 400 megawatts of solar panels have already been installed at The Red Sea destination. Once fully operational, these solar facilities are expected to prevent up to 600,000 tons of CO₂ emissions annually, significantly reducing the project’s carbon footprint.
Additionally, RSG has launched a large-scale mangrove reforestation project. By 2030, the company aims to plant 50 million mangrove trees across the region. Mangroves play a crucial role in carbon sequestration, absorbing and storing vast amounts of CO₂ while also providing critical habitat for marine life. This initiative is being carried out in collaboration with the National Center for Vegetation Cover and other environmental organizations.
Other sustainability efforts include:
- Zero waste-to-landfill policy: RSG is developing waste management solutions to ensure that all waste generated at The Red Sea project is either recycled or repurposed.
- Sustainable construction practices: The company prioritizes eco-friendly building materials and energy-efficient designs to minimize environmental impact.
- Marine conservation programs: The Red Sea region is home to diverse marine ecosystems, including coral reefs and seagrass meadows. RSG is investing in research and conservation projects to protect these fragile environments.
The Red Sea: A Growing Destination for Eco-Conscious Travelers
The Red Sea destination began welcoming guests in 2023, with five hotels currently operational. Red Sea International Airport has been handling regular domestic flights since September 2023, and in April 2024, it expanded its services to include international flights, starting with a twice-weekly route connecting The Red Sea to Dubai International Airport.
Upon full completion in 2030, The Red Sea project will include 50 luxury resorts, offering up to 8,000 hotel rooms and over 1,000 residential properties across 22 islands and six inland sites. The destination will also feature world-class amenities such as high-end marinas, golf courses, entertainment venues, fine dining establishments, and a variety of leisure facilities.
With a strong emphasis on sustainability, RSG is positioning The Red Sea as a global model for eco-conscious tourism. Visitors will have the opportunity to experience luxury while contributing to conservation efforts and minimizing their carbon footprint.
