Boskalis’ Eco-Friendly Dredger ‘Willem van Oranje’ Sets Sail for Oman
In a significant move for sustainable maritime operations, Royal Boskalis Westminster N.V. has dispatched its trailing suction hopper dredger (TSHD), the ‘Willem van Oranje’, to Sohar, Oman. The vessel departed from Singapore and is expected to arrive in Oman on February 10, 2025.
The ‘Willem van Oranje’ is notable for being the world’s first dredging vessel to operate entirely on 100% bio-fuel oil. This innovative fuel, derived from used cooking oil, is sulfur-free and contains no fossil components, enabling a substantial carbon emission reduction of up to 90%. This advancement aligns with Boskalis’ commitment to decreasing its environmental footprint.
Built in 2010, the 143-meter-long dredger boasts a hopper capacity of 12,000 cubic meters and a total installed power of 13,870 kW. It can dredge to depths of up to 62 meters, making it a versatile asset for various maritime infrastructure projects worldwide.
Prior to its current mission, the ‘Willem van Oranje’ completed an extensive deployment in the Maldives, contributing significantly to the region’s land development efforts. The vessel delivered millions of cubic meters of sand to key islands, including Hulhumalé, Thilafushi, Giraavaru, and Fushidiggaru Falhu.
The upcoming project in Oman underscores Boskalis’ dedication to integrating sustainable practices into large-scale maritime operations. By utilizing bio-fuel technology, the company not only enhances operational efficiency but also sets a benchmark for environmental responsibility in the dredging industry.
As the ‘Willem van Oranje’ embarks on this mission, it exemplifies the potential for combining technological innovation with ecological stewardship, paving the way for a more sustainable future in maritime infrastructure development.
