Dr. Alaa Murabit – Strategist, Doctor, Mama, and Global Changemaker

Dr. Alaa Murabit’s name has become synonymous with visionary leadership, activism, and transformative change. Her influence extends from grassroots movements to the highest levels of global governance, with initiatives that have shaped policy in every country. Known worldwide as a strategist, doctor, activist, and devoted mother, she has dedicated her life to advancing sustainable development, global peace, health, and women’s agency. Her work bridges healthcare, finance, policy, and advocacy,  making her one of the most dynamic and influential voices of her generation.

Early Life and Education

Born in Canada and raised in Libya as the middle of 11 children, Alaa Murabit grew up moving between two worlds. That early exposure to difference shaped how she sees people, power, and potential.

Driven by a belief that health is the foundation of dignity and opportunity, she earned her medical degree. In her final year of medical school, amid the Libyan revolution, she founded The Voice of Libyan Women, an organization advancing women’s participation and rights in one of the world’s most complex conflict environments.

Her medical training provided her with both empathy and evidence, a grounded understanding of how social, economic, and political systems intersect. It remains the foundation of her approach today: holistic, people-centered, and unapologetically ambitious about changing what holds communities, and especially women, back.

Becoming a Global Voice for Change

Dr. Alaa Murabit’s global recognition began with her role as one of the leading experts to the United Nations’ Global Study on the Implementation of Security Council Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace, and Security. Her expertise in conflict and reconstruction led her to advise the UN Security Council, helping reframe women as architects of peace rather than bystanders to conflict.

At 24, she went on to shape the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), where she helped embed equality, peace, and inclusion at the core of the global agenda. Appointed a UN Sustainable Development Advocate by both Ban Ki-Moon and António Guterres, she championed the principle that progress must be locally led to last.

Later, as a UN High-Level Commissioner for Health, Employment, and Economic Growth, she designed strategies that linked health systems to economic opportunity and social stability, addressing inequality and conflict at their roots. Across every role, her leadership has been defined by one conviction: real change endures only when it begins with people.

Her work through these roles has shaped policies adopted by all 193 UN member states, directly impacting all our lives, every day.

Advocate for Women’s Power

Among Dr. Murabit’s most celebrated contributions is her unwavering advocacy for women’s leadership and agency. She has long argued that women’s empowerment is not just moral, it’s strategic and essential to building peaceful and prosperous societies. Through her policies, speeches, writing, and mentorship, she challenges structural barriers and champions a new model of leadership rooted in empathy, inclusion, and shared power.

She has spoken on some of the world’s most influential stages, from the United Nations to TED, urging global leaders to recognize that peace and progress are impossible without women at the table. Her TED Talk, “What My Religion Really Says About Women,” viewed by millions, continues to inspire activists and young leaders worldwide to lead boldly, even in the face of conflict and resistance.
