From Bahrain to the World: A Trailblazing Physiotherapist

Dr. Dana Mohamed’s journey is a testament to resilience, passion, and dedication. Born and raised in Bahrain, she embarked on her academic pursuit at the age of 18, moving abroad to study physiotherapy. In 2016, she achieved a significant milestone by completing her clinical PhD in physiotherapy in the United Kingdom, just months before welcoming her first child. This accomplishment marked her as the first Bahraini female to complete her undergraduate, postgraduate, junior training, and clinical PhD in physiotherapy in the UK.

A Legacy of Healing: Inspired by Her Father

Dr. Dana’s passion for healthcare was deeply influenced by her father, a prominent consultant in his field. His dedication to patient care and enthusiasm for his profession inspired her from a young age. Guided by his example, she developed a keen interest in clinical work, particularly focusing on chronic conditions and women’s health.

Pioneering Women’s Health in the Gulf Region

In 2008, Dr. Dana broke new ground by becoming the first Bahraini female physiotherapist to join the Bahrain Olympic Team at the Beijing Olympic Games. Her commitment to women’s health led her to specialize further, becoming both British and US-certified in Pelvic, Obstetric, and Gynecological Physiotherapy—a rare subspecialty in the physiotherapy world, especially in Bahrain and the Gulf region.

Motherhood: A Catalyst for Deeper Understanding

The birth of her children profoundly impacted Dr. Dana’s professional perspective. Experiencing motherhood firsthand deepened her empathy and understanding of the unique challenges women face during pregnancy and postpartum. This personal journey fueled her passion for supporting women through specialized physiotherapy, focusing on rehabilitation, exercise, and the transition back to physical activity after childbirth, illness, or obesity.

Overcoming Challenges: Building Strength Through Adversity

Relocating to a new country at 18 presented its own set of challenges. Adapting to a different culture, academic environment, and being away from family required resilience and determination. These experiences not only shaped her character but also enhanced her ability to connect with patients from diverse backgrounds, understanding the nuances of their individual journeys.

Advocating for Women’s Health: Bridging the Information Gap

Despite advancements in medical science, Dr. Dana observed a significant lack of accessible information and support for women-specific conditions. She emphasizes the importance of women supporting women, especially in healthcare. Her mission is to bridge this gap, providing comprehensive care and education to empower women in managing their health.

Current Endeavors: Transforming Women’s Healthcare

Today, Dr. Dana continues to advocate for improved healthcare services for women. Her focus remains on enhancing rehabilitation programs, promoting exercise, and facilitating a smooth return to physical activity for women post-pregnancy, after illness, or dealing with obesity. Through her work, she aims to create a more inclusive and supportive healthcare environment for women.
