Empower’s ELIPS Expands Across GCC, Enhancing District Cooling Infrastructure

Empower Logstor Insulated Pipe Systems (ELIPS), a joint venture between Emirates Central Cooling Systems Corporation (Empower) and Danish company Logstor, is significantly expanding its presence across the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region. This strategic move aims to meet the growing demand for efficient and sustainable district cooling solutions in the Middle East.

A Decade of Strategic Growth

Established in 2010, ELIPS has been pivotal in supplying high-quality pre-insulated pipes essential for district cooling systems. These systems are recognized for their energy efficiency and environmental benefits, particularly vital in the GCC’s hot desert climate. The region’s extreme temperatures, often soaring above 50°C, have escalated the need for effective cooling solutions. District cooling has emerged as a preferred method, being over 50% more efficient than traditional air conditioning systems.

Strategic Expansion Across the GCC

ELIPS’s expansion is timely, aligning with the GCC’s rapid urbanization and the initiation of mega infrastructure projects. Saudi Arabia, for instance, is witnessing a surge in construction activities, including the development of new cities like Neom and New Murabba in Riyadh. These projects necessitate advanced cooling infrastructures, presenting a substantial opportunity for ELIPS to contribute its expertise.

The Saudi Arabian district cooling market is projected to grow from USD 1,515.0 million in 2024 to USD 2,585.3 million by 2030, at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 9.4%. This growth is driven by factors such as rapid urbanization, the launch of mega infrastructure projects, and a heightened demand for energy-efficient cooling solutions.

Commitment to Quality and Sustainability

ELIPS’s manufacturing facility, inaugurated in 2010 in Jebel Ali, Dubai, stands as the UAE’s largest pre-insulated pipe manufacturing plant. This $25 million facility caters to the requirements of district cooling services and the oil and gas sector across the Middle East. The plant’s strategic location enables ELIPS to efficiently serve the GCC market, ensuring timely delivery and installation of pipe networks.

The company’s commitment to quality is evident in its production of high-caliber pre-insulated pipes, which are crucial for the efficiency and reliability of district cooling systems. By manufacturing these pipes locally, ELIPS not only ensures stringent quality control but also contributes to the region’s economic diversification and sustainability goals.

Pioneering Projects and Collaborations

Since its inception, ELIPS has been involved in several landmark projects. Notably, in 2010, the company secured a contract to supply 20 kilometers of pre-insulated pipes for the Fox Hills project in Qatar. This project, part of the larger Lusail development, encompasses parks, commercial, and residential facilities, reflecting a blend of Arab Qatari and contemporary European architecture.

ELIPS’s collaboration with Empower has also been instrumental in expanding Dubai’s district cooling infrastructure. By the end of 2015, Empower’s pipeline network was projected to exceed 225 kilometers, a testament to the successful partnership between the two entities. This expansion has been crucial in meeting the cooling demands of various developments, including Business Bay and Dubai Design District.

Addressing Environmental and Economic Challenges

The GCC’s reliance on traditional air conditioning has historically placed a significant load on electricity grids and contributed to high greenhouse gas emissions. District cooling offers a more sustainable alternative, reducing energy consumption and environmental impact. ELIPS’s expansion aligns with regional efforts to adopt eco-friendly technologies and reduce carbon footprints.

Moreover, the company’s growth supports economic diversification, a key objective of initiatives like Saudi Vision 2030. By investing in advanced manufacturing facilities and fostering local expertise, ELIPS contributes to building a resilient and diversified economy in the GCC.

Future Outlook

As the GCC continues to urbanize and prioritize sustainable development, the demand for efficient district cooling solutions is expected to rise. ELIPS, with its established presence and commitment to quality, is well-positioned to lead this transformation. The company’s strategic expansions and collaborations underscore its dedication to meeting the region’s cooling needs while promoting environmental sustainability and economic growth.

In conclusion, ELIPS’s proactive approach in expanding its footprint across the GCC not only addresses the immediate cooling requirements of the region but also sets a benchmark for sustainable and efficient infrastructure development. As the Middle East grapples with climatic challenges and strives for economic diversification, ELIPS stands out as a pivotal player in shaping the future of district cooling.
