Greece and Saudi Arabia Strengthen Tourism Cooperation

In a significant move to bolster tourism ties, Greece and Saudi Arabia have agreed to enhance collaboration in the tourism sector. This development was highlighted during a recent meeting between Greek Tourism Minister Olga Kefalogianni and ambassadors from various Arab nations, including Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, Jordan, Qatar, Kuwait, Lebanon, Algeria, Palestine, Sudan, Syria, and Tunisia.

The meeting, held at the residence of the Saudi Arabian ambassador in Athens, focused on showcasing Greece’s high-quality tourism services and exploring investment opportunities. Minister Kefalogianni emphasized Greece’s commitment to sustainable tourism development, extending the tourism season beyond the traditional summer months, and promoting lesser-known destinations to encourage visitors to explore the country’s diverse offerings.

Key areas of interest discussed included:

  • Investment Opportunities: Highlighting Greece’s diverse tourism offerings, including alternative tourism experiences designed to provide visitors with more options.
  • Sustainable Tourism: Emphasizing the importance of sustainable development in the tourism sector.
  • Tourism Education: Stressing the critical role of education and training in maintaining Greece’s strong tourism industry.

The ambassadors acknowledged Greece’s strong reputation as a tourism destination in their countries and expressed interest in boosting bilateral tourism flows. They also discussed potential collaborations in areas such as training programs and sustainable tourism initiatives. Key areas of interest included simplifying visa procedures, establishing direct flights between Arab countries and Greece, and exploring investment opportunities in Greece’s tourism sector.

This meeting follows the inaugural High-Level Strategic Cooperation Council (HLSCC) between Greece and Saudi Arabia, held in Al Ula, which marked Greece’s first-ever HLSCC with a Middle Eastern nation. The council identified tourism as a key area of cooperation, underscoring the strategic importance of the bilateral relationship.

The strengthening of tourism ties between Greece and Saudi Arabia reflects a shared commitment to enhancing bilateral relations and exploring mutual opportunities in the tourism sector. Both nations are poised to benefit from increased collaboration, leading to enriched cultural exchanges and economic growth.
