Italy Becomes Qatar’s Largest Trading Partner in Europe, Strengthening Bilateral Ties
Italy has solidified its position as Qatar’s largest trading partner in Europe and the third-largest globally, reflecting a deepening economic and diplomatic relationship. The milestone was highlighted during the recent visit of Italy’s Undersecretary of State for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Maria Tripodi, to Doha.
This growing partnership underscores the strong commercial and investment ties between the two nations, with major collaborations in energy, defense, infrastructure, and cultural exchanges.
Italy and Qatar’s Expanding Trade Relationship
Trade between Italy and Qatar has seen significant growth over the years. In 2022, bilateral trade reached a record €7.69 billion, more than doubling from €3.18 billion in 2021. The FIFA World Cup 2022, hosted by Qatar, contributed to a surge in trade activities, leading to increased demand for infrastructure, technology, and services.
While trade levels slightly declined in 2023 after the conclusion of the World Cup, they remained well above pre-2022 figures. The sustained trade volume indicates long-term economic cooperation rather than a short-term spike.
Italy’s exports to Qatar primarily include industrial machinery, luxury goods, fashion, pharmaceuticals, and automobiles. In contrast, Qatar’s main exports to Italy revolve around energy resources, particularly liquefied natural gas (LNG) and petrochemical products.
Key Sectors Driving Italy-Qatar Cooperation
1. Energy Partnerships
One of the most critical sectors strengthening Italy-Qatar ties is energy. Italy’s major energy company, Eni SpA, signed a long-term 27-year LNG supply agreement with QatarEnergy in October 2023. The deal secures a stable supply of Qatari natural gas to Italy, reinforcing the country’s energy security and diversification efforts.
This agreement aligns with Qatar’s long-term strategy to expand its LNG production and distribution worldwide. Given Europe’s growing need for energy security, Italy’s deal with Qatar plays a crucial role in stabilizing its energy market.
