Kuwait Faces Unprecedented Cold Wave with Subzero Temperatures

Kuwait is currently experiencing an extraordinary cold wave, with temperatures plunging to record lows. Meteorological reports indicate that certain areas have recorded temperatures as low as -3°C, marking one of the coldest periods in the nation’s recent history. The freezing conditions have significantly impacted daily life, affecting agriculture, infrastructure, and public health.

Why Is Kuwait So Cold?

The Kuwait Meteorological Department has attributed this severe cold spell to a high-pressure system extending from Eastern Europe. This system has brought a cold and dry air mass over the region, leading to a sharp drop in temperatures. Additionally, significant cooling in the upper atmosphere, combined with light to moderate northwesterly winds, has intensified the cold wave.

Meteorologist Dharar Al-Ali stated that the country will continue to be affected by this high-pressure system, resulting in cold daytime temperatures and extremely cold nights. Frost is expected in agricultural and desert areas until at least Thursday. The unusual cold is expected to ease slightly by the weekend, but residents should still prepare for chilly weather.

Record-Breaking Temperatures Across Kuwait

Weather monitoring stations have reported astonishingly low temperatures across the country:

  • Salmi Station: -3°C
  • Abdali: -2°C
  • Kuwait International Airport: 6°C

Meteorologist Issa Ramadan further highlighted that in Mataraba, the perceived temperature dropped to -8°C, while in Salmi, it reached -6°C. The actual recorded minimum temperatures were -1°C in both locations. Meanwhile, in Kuwait City, the perceived temperature was 0°C, with an actual minimum of 8°C.

This cold wave is among the most extreme February cold spells Kuwait has experienced in the past 60 years, particularly in desert regions where temperatures tend to drop more sharply at night.

How Is the Cold Wave Affecting Daily Life?

The severe drop in temperatures has had widespread effects on different sectors, including agriculture, public health, and infrastructure.

1. Agriculture at Risk

Frost formation in agricultural areas poses a serious threat to crops. Many farmers are concerned that the extreme cold may damage or even destroy produce, leading to potential food shortages and price hikes in the local market.

2. Health Risks Increase

Doctors are advising residents, especially young children and the elderly, to take precautions against cold-related illnesses such as hypothermia, frostbite, and respiratory issues. The cold weather can also worsen conditions such as asthma, bronchitis, and arthritis. People with pre-existing heart conditions are advised to avoid sudden exposure to the cold, as it can put extra strain on the cardiovascular system.

3. Higher Energy Consumption

The drastic drop in temperatures has led to a surge in electricity demand, as residents rely heavily on heating devices to stay warm. This could put pressure on Kuwait’s power grid, potentially leading to localized power outages.

4. Impact on Transportation and Daily Activities

While Kuwait does not usually experience snow or ice, the cold weather has affected early morning travel, with some drivers reporting frost on windshields and reduced visibility. Residents are also adjusting their daily routines, with many opting to stay indoors during the coldest hours.

What’s Next? The Upcoming Weather Forecast

The Kuwait Meteorological Department forecasts that the cold weather will persist throughout the week, with both daytime and nighttime temperatures remaining significantly lower than normal. Frost is expected to continue forming in agricultural and desert areas until at least Thursday.

However, there is some relief on the horizon. By Friday evening, the impact of the high-pressure system is expected to weaken, allowing a low-pressure system to move in. This shift will bring southeasterly winds and slightly warmer daytime temperatures. Some areas may also experience light, scattered rain beginning Friday evening.

How to Stay Safe During This Cold Wave

Authorities are urging residents to take necessary precautions to stay warm and safe during this unusual cold spell. Here are some essential safety tips:

1. Stay Updated

Regularly check weather updates from the Kuwait Meteorological Department and follow official advisories. Weather conditions can change quickly, and staying informed is crucial.

2. Dress in Layers

Wear warm clothing, including sweaters, jackets, scarves, gloves, and hats, to protect yourself from the cold. Layering is the best way to retain body heat.

3. Protect Vulnerable Individuals

Ensure that children, elderly individuals, and those with chronic health conditions are adequately protected from the cold. Avoid unnecessary exposure to extreme temperatures.

4. Keep Your Home Warm Safely

  • Use heating devices carefully and ensure proper ventilation to prevent carbon monoxide buildup.
  • Avoid using open flames or charcoal for heating indoors, as this can lead to dangerous levels of carbon monoxide poisoning.
  • Check that your heating appliances are in good working condition to prevent accidents.

5. Protect Pets, Plants, and Livestock

  • Bring pets indoors or provide them with warm shelter.
  • Cover delicate plants to prevent frost damage.
  • Farmers should take necessary precautions to protect livestock from extreme cold.

6. Be Cautious While Driving

  • Allow extra time for travel, especially in the early morning when visibility may be reduced due to fog or frost.
  • Use antifreeze in your car’s windshield washer fluid to prevent freezing.

How Long Will the Cold Last?

While the cold wave is expected to persist for several more days, a gradual warming trend may begin by the weekend. However, meteorologists warn that Kuwait could experience more unexpected cold snaps before winter ends.

For now, residents are advised to remain prepared and take necessary precautions to stay safe during this rare and extreme weather event.
