The Muscat Global Knowledge Dialogue, a significant international event focusing on science and innovation, commenced today under the patronage of His Highness Sayyid Asaad bin Tariq Al Said, Deputy Prime Minister for International Relations and Cooperation Affairs and Personal Representative of His Majesty the Sultan. The two-day forum is being held at the Oman Convention and Exhibition Centre (OCEC) and is organized by the Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation in collaboration with the International Science Council (ISC).

In her opening address, Dr. Rahma bint Ibrahim Al Mahrouqi, Minister of Higher Education, Research and Innovation, emphasized the forum’s objective to foster knowledge exchange and collaboration among nations. She highlighted the importance of transforming innovative ideas into tangible economic and social benefits, aligning with Oman Vision 2040’s goal of advancing a knowledge-based economy.

The dialogue sessions are centered around three key themes:

  1. Future of Science: Exploring emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence and open science.
  2. Science Diplomacy: Discussing the role of science in driving sustainable environmental and societal transformations.
  3. Role of Science in Society: Addressing the need for greater equality and social cohesion.

Over 500 participants, including scientists, researchers, policymakers, and experts from around the globe, are attending the event. The discussions aim to address global challenges, set priorities for international scientific cooperation, and build partnerships in research and innovation.

The Muscat Global Knowledge Dialogue serves as a prelude to the ISC General Assembly, scheduled for January 29 and 30, 2025, at the same venue. The ISC General Assembly is the premier occasion for ISC Members and Affiliated Bodies, Fellows, and partners from all domains of science and regions of the world to meet for cross-disciplinary, strategic discussions on challenges and priorities for international cooperation in science.

This event marks the first in-person General Assembly of the ISC since the organization’s establishment in July 2018. The ISC General Assembly meets every four years and serves as the highest platform for members and partners to discuss strategic issues and explore new pathways for international scientific collaboration.

The ISC was formed through the merger of the International Council for Science (ICSU) and the International Social Science Council (ISSC) and now represents over 140 countries. It brings together scientific academies, research councils, and international organizations committed to advancing science and utilizing it to tackle global challenges and promote societal development.

Oman has been an active member of the ISC, contributing significantly to global scientific progress and innovation. The country’s commitment to fostering scientific research and innovation is evident through its support for various research projects and initiatives aimed at addressing global challenges.

The Muscat Global Knowledge Dialogue and the ISC General Assembly provide a platform for international collaboration, allowing scientists and policymakers to share knowledge, discuss pressing issues, and develop strategies for sustainable development. These events underscore the critical role of science in addressing global challenges and highlight the importance of international cooperation in advancing scientific knowledge and innovation.

As the event continues, participants are expected to engage in discussions that will shape the future of science and its role in society, fostering a collaborative environment that encourages innovative solutions to the world’s most pressing issues.
