Qatar Enhances Eid Travel with New Gates at Hamad International Airport

As the Eid season approaches, Hamad International Airport (HIA) in Doha has unveiled its newly completed Concourses D and E. This marks a significant milestone in the airport’s expansion, improving travel for millions of passengers, particularly during the busy Eid period.

Major Expansion to Handle Growing Passenger Traffic

HIA’s expansion project, which began in 2018, has significantly increased its passenger handling capacity. The airport can now accommodate over 65 million travelers annually, an increase of 13 million.

The total terminal area has expanded by 14%, covering 845,000 square meters. With the addition of 17 new boarding gates, bringing the total to 62, passengers can expect a more efficient boarding process with reduced reliance on bus transfers.

Badr Mohammed Al Meer, Group Chief Executive of Qatar Airways Group, highlighted the broader impact of this expansion:

“This is not just about increasing capacity – it is about strengthening the entire Qatar Airways network, enhancing operational resilience, and supporting Qatar’s economic growth in line with the Qatar National Vision 2030.”

A Smarter and More Efficient Passenger Experience

The newly opened Concourses D and E introduce cutting-edge technology designed to enhance the passenger journey. The airport now features advanced self-boarding technology, allowing for a seamless, automated boarding process that reduces waiting times. Smart systems have been implemented to speed up travel document verification, ensuring smooth transitions from check-in to departure gates.

In addition to faster processing, accessibility has been a key focus in the design of these new concourses. Features such as hearing loops, barrier-free pathways, and spacious seating areas make the airport more inclusive for passengers with disabilities.

Sustainable Airport Expansion

HIA has integrated sustainability into its expansion, ensuring that Concourses D and E meet strict environmental standards. The new areas have been designed to achieve a 4-star rating under the Global Sustainability Assessment System (GSAS) and meet Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold certification.

To reduce its environmental impact, the airport has introduced energy-efficient systems, advanced water management solutions, and improved climate control technologies. These efforts align with Qatar’s commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility.

More Shopping and Dining Choices for Travelers

The airport’s expansion includes a significant upgrade to its retail and dining options. Qatar Duty Free has added over nine new stores, increasing the available shopping space by 2,700 square meters. Passengers now have a wider variety of retail and dining choices, reinforcing HIA’s reputation as a world-class travel hub.

Travel Advisory for Eid Al-Fitr Passengers

With the increase in passenger traffic expected during the Eid Al-Fitr holiday, HIA has issued important travel guidelines to ensure a smooth journey:

  • Arrive Early: Travelers are advised to check in online and arrive at the airport at least three hours before departure. Check-in counters will close 60 minutes before takeoff.
  • Use Self-Service Facilities: Self-service check-in kiosks and baggage drop stations can help passengers save time. E-gates are available for citizens and residents to speed up the immigration process.
  • Follow Baggage Guidelines: Passengers should adhere to weight and size restrictions to avoid delays. Oversized and non-standard baggage should be avoided.
  • Security Compliance: To ensure smooth security checks, all liquids should be packed in clear, resealable plastic bags with each container not exceeding 100ml. Electronic devices larger than a mobile phone must be placed separately for screening.
  • Parking and Drop-Off Rules: Vehicles should not be left unattended in curbside areas. Designated parking areas should be used for longer stays.

Passengers can also download the ‘HIAQatar’ mobile app for real-time flight updates, baggage claim information, and directions to airport services. The app also provides details on Qatar Duty Free shopping and dining offers.

Conclusion

The opening of Concourses D and E at Hamad International Airport represents a major leap forward for Qatar’s aviation sector. With increased capacity, cutting-edge technology, a strong focus on sustainability, and enhanced passenger comfort, HIA continues to cement its status as a leading global airport.
