Doha, Qatar — The Samla Race, Qatar’s premier endurance event, has long been a testament to human resilience and determination. Derived from the Arabic word meaning “strength and perseverance in the face of hardship,” the race challenges participants across Qatar’s diverse terrains. Since its inception in 2017, Samla has grown in stature and scope, reflecting Qatar’s commitment to promoting sports and a healthy lifestyle.
A New Era of Inclusivity

In a landmark decision, the Samla Race Organizing Committee announced that starting from its 2025 edition, the race will welcome women and international participants. This move marks a significant shift from its traditional format, which was exclusively open to Qatari male citizens. Azzam Al-Mannai, CEO of the Organizing Committee, highlighted that discussions with Visit Qatar are in the final stages to include the Samla Race in the global events calendar. “Qatar is hosting international, regional, and local events throughout the calendar, so the idea is to create a competitive product and brand from Qatar,” Al-Mannai stated.
The 2024 Edition: A Test of Endurance
The sixth edition of the Samla Race took place from December 5 to 7, 2024, covering a grueling 200 kilometers over six stages. More than 250 athletes participated, each pushing their physical and mental limits. The race commenced with a three-kilometer swim from the Al Ghariya area to Fuwairit Beach. Participants then embarked on a 66-kilometer run passing through Al Zubarah towards Umm Al Maa, where they took a brief respite. The third stage involved a six-kilometer kayak journey from Umm Al Maa to the opposite shore. This was followed by a 75-kilometer cycling route passing through the Al Nasraniya area. The penultimate stage tested participants’ precision with air rifle shooting, requiring five rounds at a target from eight meters. The final challenge was a 50-kilometer run from Al Nasraniya to the finish line in Umm Bab.
Celebrating the Champions
The 2024 edition concluded with a grand ceremony at the Qatar National Convention Center, attended by dignitaries including His Excellency Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa bin Ahmed Al Thani, Minister of Sports and Youth, and His Excellency Sheikh Hamad bin Thamer Al Thani, Chairman of the Qatar Media Corporation. Faisal Hassan Al Qahtani emerged victorious, clinching his fourth Samla title and receiving a prize of QAR 500,000. Abdullah Fahd Abdullah Thani Al Zar’a secured second place, earning QAR 300,000, while Tamim Jamal Juham Abdulaziz Al Kuwari took third place with a prize of QAR 200,000. Competitors finishing from fourth to tenth place were each awarded QAR 75,000, and all race finishers received QAR 10,000, underscoring the event’s spirit of encouragement and recognition.
A Platform for Future Champions

The Samla Race has evolved into more than just a competition; it has become a nurturing ground for athletes and a producer of champions. The rigorous preparation and the challenges faced during the race have significantly contributed to the development of participants’ sports and intellectual performance. Al-Mannai expressed pride in witnessing the tangible impact of the race, noting that Samla champions often shine in global events, carrying Qatar’s flag high and showcasing the nation’s commitment to excellence in sports.
Corporate Support and Social Responsibility
The success of the Samla Race is also attributed to the unwavering support from corporate entities. Qatar Insurance Group (QIC Group), the leading insurer in Qatar and the MENA region, renewed its commitment by sponsoring the 2024 edition. Salem Al Mannai, Group CEO of QIC, emphasized that the sponsorship aligns with the company’s social responsibility and supports the country’s efforts to raise awareness of sports’ importance in the lives of individuals and communities. He remarked, “Samla is a challenging event that showcases endurance and determination, reflecting the resilience of Qatari youth.”
Looking Ahead: Samla 2025 and Beyond
The upcoming 2025 edition is poised to be a watershed moment in the race’s history. By opening its doors to women and international athletes, Samla is set to elevate its status on the global stage. This inclusivity not only reflects Qatar’s progressive vision but also enriches the competition by bringing together diverse talents from around the world. The integration of the Samla Race into Qatar’s international events calendar is expected to attract a broader audience and foster a deeper appreciation for endurance sports within the region.
Conclusion
The Samla Race stands as a symbol of Qatar’s dedication to promoting sportsmanship, resilience, and community engagement. Its evolution from a local endurance challenge to an inclusive international event mirrors the nation’s broader aspirations of unity and excellence. As the race continues to grow, it not only tests the limits of human endurance but also builds bridges across cultures, inspiring future generations to embrace the spirit of perseverance.
